One of the most common questions I’m asked is “should I tell jokes in my vlogs and social media videos?”
Great question! Humor is a good way to break the ice and grow a relationship but it can also be the fastest way to lose a friend and alienate people.
Can you pull it off?
My rule is if you successfully tell jokes to customers in person then yes, why not make the odd non-offensive joke in your videos.
The major caveat is you have to fully commit and pull the joke off. A word of warning telling a joke to yourself on camera (and looking good) is harder than it looks. When presenting to camera the more comfortable you are the better you look.
If you are not comfortable telling jokes... don't do it!
Can you business pull it off?
If your business operates in a “serious sector” financial services, law or Funeral directing, for example, you might want to think hard about whether jokes and comedy is the right fit for your brand.
Note: A “serious business” can make jokes however you need to make sure that the jokes you make do not harm your reputation.
Some jokes are for your team and not for your vlogs!
When I started out as radio presenter I was always told, if you wouldn't say it to your granny on a Sunday, don’t say it on the radio. The same can be said for most business vlogs.
You as a person may find a joke funny but will everyone read the joke in the same way? When making jokes on branded channels you need to think about who your joke could offend and could the joke do more harm than good?
Jokes are a good way to inject fun and humanity into your videos however telling jokes to camera is not as easy as it looks. Don't believe me? Why not give it a try.
Let me know how it goes!
